Is MPI basically OpenMP on nodes?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to high performance computing (HPC) and I'm trying to clarify some basics. MPI seems to serve the same purpose as OpenMP, but it works across multiple nodes instead of just threads on a single node.

Is that the right way to think about it?
